envecon 2024: Submit Your Work

The UK Network for Environmental Economists (UKNEE) have announced that envecon, the applied environmental economics conference, will return to The Royal Society on Friday, 8th March, 2024.

eftec has operated UKNEE as a separate, non-profit entity for over 20 years. We are excited to see your work and to meet many of you at the conference next year.

envecon is the only environmental economics conference in the UK that brings a large delegation of policy makers together with research providers, NGOs, and the private sector. Featuring a varied agenda, envecon is a unique opportunity to meet peers, address decision-makers, and discuss the latest research and policy implications in environmental economics. In addition to in-person attendance, online attendance will be available.

You can now submit your work to present at next year's envecon. The deadline is 30th November, 2023. Please read the call for papers thoroughly before submitting your work.

UKNEE welcome papers on any topic with a focus on the application of environmental and behavioural economics (through methods such as valuation, appraisal, natural capital accounts, and economic instruments) to studies of green finance, land, fresh water, marine environments, air quality, climate, and beyond with regards to the workings of any economic sector or policy area. Papers using economics in multidisciplinary contexts are particularly encouraged.

We look forward to seeing your work and to meeting with you all next March.

Webinar: Introducing the TNFD Recommendations

with Emily McKenzie, Technical Director, TNFD

This September, the long-awaited Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) recommendations and guidance will be published.

We are therefore excited to announce that UKNEE's next webinar, taking place on the 27th of September, will feature Emily McKenzie: Technical Director, TNFD. Emily is a long-standing friend and contributor to UKNEE, having previously presented her work on the Dasgupta Review before delivering the keynote speech at envecon 2022 on the progress of the TNFD.

In the webinar, Emily will give an overview of TNFD’s finalised recommended disclosures, discuss additional guidance such as the LEAP approach, suggest recommended metrics, and reveal what is next for the TNFD before opening to questions from the audience.

TNFD’s mission is to “develop and deliver a risk management and disclosure framework for organisations to report and act on evolving nature-related risks, with the ultimate aim of supporting a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-positive outcomes.” Following from the success of the TCFD, which has helped expand and standardize the disclosure of climate risks around the world, the TNFD holds vast potential to similarly empower organisations to understand their impacts and dependencies on nature.

This webinar is therefore an excellent opportunity for you to gain an understanding, and be involved in the discussion, around a major global development in environmental economics and green finance.

Value Commission Launches Public Consultation

Provide your feedback by 20th October 2023

Value factors are highly important in our work in environmental economics. Developed through assessments and studies, they can reveal impacts, dependencies, and trade-offs between different forms of capital. "$1 invested in coastal wetlands provides $5 of protection in coastal infrastructure" is an example of a value factor which illustrates their potential to be used to drive investment in nature.

However, there is currently little transparency or accountability in how value factors are developed across organisations and jurisdictions, making global collaboration challenging.

The Value Commission, operated by Capitals Coalition, are seeking to establish this transparency and accountability across the use of value factors by organisations. Made up of over 30 experts around the world, they are currently co-designing a set of clear and transparent global criteria spanning the creation and use of value factors and will consolidate existing efforts into an open-access Value database.

The Value Commission is now seeking public comment on the global Transparency Criteria. To provide your comments by 20th October 2023, click this link
